Gary Neville reiterated that Marcus Rashford should be Manchester United’s first choice striker following the youngster’s superb performance against Tottenham Hotspur.
The youngster has started in the No.9 role for five of the six games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, claiming four goals and one assist in the process.
His goal at Wembley was elegance personified: one touch to bring down Paul Pogba’s pinpoint pass, one touch to fire the ball across and past Hugo Lloris.
Speaking during the game, Neville once again stressed that Rashford simply has to be starting up front every week.
The calmness and accuracy of that finish against Spurs – which even confounded Solskjaer, who initially thought he should have hit the ball high inside the near post – was another example of the confidence and composure running through Rashford’s veins under a manager who trusts him.
Even with Mourinho at the helm, the 21-year-old was intelligent on the ball, fast and agile, smart with his passing and crossing. The only area where Romelu Lukaku was notably superior was his capacity to score goals.
Not anymore. Over the last three weeks, with Mourinho’s defeatist tone no longer ringing in his ears, Rashford has been unassailable in the box, clearly benefiting from working closely with Solskjaer, one of the club’s most iconic strikers of all time.
He is, by some distance, the club’s top striker. Long may it continue.
